Bwa Kayiman Ceremony

In August of 1791 an assembly of revolutionaries under the leadership of Boukman Duty met in the woods called Bwa Kayiman in the north of the St. Dominugue colony. Eight days later the northern plains were burning, and a revolution was in full swing. The Haitian Revolution gave birth to the world’s first enduring black republic, and it was the only successful slave revolution in history.

A performance by the Hunter College Haitian Drum Workshop segues into the 22nd annual commemorative Bwa Kayiman ceremony in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.
